How do I commission you?
Email me with as much details as you can about your request. Please be as specific as possible, and include large photos (not thumbnails) for reference. I'll reply with a quote including price, timeline, the specific terms of the rights, responsibilities and copyrights/license you and I will have throughout the process. Review the quote and ask any questions you might have. Sending the required deposit will serve as your electronic signature to begin the project.
Quotes may change based on additional revisions during the art process. For this reason, knowing what you what at the beginning saves you money and ensures you're happy with the art.
How long does it take?
My illustrations and paintings (depending on complexity & style) can take anywhere from one day up to a week depending on revisions.
How much do you charge?
My fee is an hourly rate that depends on complexity, time & deadline, revisions, output and size. Contact me to get an accurate quote.
How do I pay you?
I accept payment via Paypal. It's fast, secure, and you don't need an account, just a credit card. I'm happy to send you an invoice, but please be sure to request one, and include your business name and address.
I require a deposit of %40 of the quote paid in order to begin work. The rest is due upon completion.
What if I want you to change something before you finish?
Included in your fee are three major revisions (structural changes, new pose, different compositions, etc.) Additional requested revisions will be charged at an hourly rate as specified in the quote. When requesting revisions, please provide as much detail as possible to ensure completion.
What if I want to cancel the commission?
In the event of your cancellation of this commission, or any delay in payment or reply to previews of more than two months, I will invoice you for the greater of either: 1) all work completed up to the date of written notification, including expenses; or 2) the amount of the advance deposit made for this project. All artwork will remain my property, but will be available if the project should be resumed at a later time. In the event that I fail to deliver the completed commission artwork by the due date I will refund the full deposit.
How do you send the art?
Deliveries are digital ready to print formatted files I email you (for this reason you should use a Gmail account, it's free and accepts large email files,) that you can print yourself, or take to a local printer. If you don't have a printer, I recommend Uprinting.com for posters/canvas art as they do great online printing work inexpensively. I'm happy to discuss other options for sending you the files.
I want to commission you but I don't have any money—I have a great idea or project logo concept, that's guaranteed to make money and I will promote your work and get you lots of exposure, will you do it?
In short, probably not.
At length:
Pro bono or spec work, or “contest design” while innocent-seeming at heart, doesn't pay for my son's diapers, or my rent. I've been illustrating for over a decade and one thing I've learned is that work for exposure and publicity has never put food on the table. If you want me to create something for you, please respect that it takes time and resources. As Graham D. Pilling so gorgeously states:
“to truly appreciate the value of a thing, one has to show respect to the passion, craft, blood, sweat, tears, and above all time that goes into its creation. When one genuinely values and respects something, they understand the importance of not asking someone to give that thing away for free.”
Put yourself in my position. You have a newborn to clothe, diaper, feed and house, and I'm asking you to take time away from providing for that newborn to create something for me which I promise to tell all my friends about, but will not give you any money for. Do you really think I value your work?
That said, if you are a nonprofit organization, or a business that can offer barter services in trade, then email me, and I will consider it.
